Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper describes challenging research issues in character recognition in the 21st century. The issues include two kinds of deformation problems, image degradation and shape distorition of characters, especially for character recognition in scene and document analysis. We also discuss the text-line extraction, individual character segmentation, feature extraction, and classification in recognition of characters with noisy backgrounds.
