Numerical 3-D Shape Inference from Image Brightness

Abstract(in English) The brightness of the Lambertian surface varies with the cosine of the angle formed by the direction of the light source and the direction of the surface normal. But in the real world, The object surface are almost non-Lambertian. The brightness of the non-Lambertian surface depends on the direction of the light source, the direction of the surface normal and the direction of the viewing. It is difficult to generalize shape recovery from Image Brightness (shading) because the reflectance map of non-Lambertian object surface is different, corresponding to different material of the object. This paper proposes the algorithm for shape recovery from shading in case of non-Lambertian surface. In the algorithm parameters determining general reflection property are identified by using occluding boundary, simultaneously the normal of the object surface is estimated, and 3-D shape is recovered.
