Toward new development in Character recognition : Today's character recognition in Europe and in North America

Abstract(in English) This report describes comparison between character recognition in both of Europe and North America and in Japan. Research activities for 1970's in Japan have achieved release from character shape constraint. Research activities for 1980's in Japan have achieved release from character class restriction. Since 1990 research activities in Europe and in North America has been challanging release from format constraint in document by development of check reading systems etc., Free format character recognition might be important as well as isolated character recognition from now in Japan.
