Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) An interface using documents or memorandums is expected to be used as such a kind of interface. To transfer the human's will onto machines, it needs exact interface with less restriction. This paper describes free-format documents recognition systems that have high flexibility. A basic system is constructed with several functions such as, format recognition, character segmentation, and character recognition. Next, the understanding function is introduced to improve the performance of the segmentation scheme. Moreover, to increase the flexibility, we add several functions such as characters' inclination compensation, segmentation that is not influenced by characters' thickness and size, and use of words' knowledge. From experiment results, the proposed system is effective to process free-format documents.
