Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Several methods have been proposed for building 3-D object models from multiple range images mainly on the basis of the deformable models and pseudo-dynamics. However, both surface smoothness and orientation discontinuities cannot be properly preserved in these methods. This paper proposes a new 3-D object modeling method that generates refined triangular meshes while preserving both the surface smoothness and orientation discontinuities. We formulate the process into a problem of minimizing an energy functional that integrates the following two terms by using the idea of MRFs : a closeness term between the model and observation data; and a piecewise smoothness term on the adjacent meshes. Moreover, we show that next-to-optimal solutions can be stably obtained by utilizing a deterministic annealing.
