A study on a traffic flow observation method by image processing

Abstract(in English) We propose a new method for traffic flow observation by image processing. In the method we set a ITV camera on a pedestrian bridge, that is, the ITV camera's height is about 6~7 m. Overlooked road scene from the ITV camera is processed by our image processor. The image processor tracks each vehicle from near the camera to faraway place. It is about 200 m distant from the ITV camera. Then the image processor measures number of passing vehicles and vehicle speeds, and detects traffic congestion, low speed vehicles and stopping vehicles. In our method we do not use a background image that is a road image without any vehicles like a conventional method. Therefore we need not replace a new background image. We had some experiments using actual road scene. The road is two lanes traffic in each direction. We processed the road traffic scene by a DOS/V personal computer and our image processor board with ISA interface. In this paper, we shall report our image processing algorithm and results of the experiments.
