Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Japanese signatures almost always consist of three, four, or five Japanese letters such as Kanji, Hiragana, or Katakana. Japanese people usually write their signature with arbitrary spacing between the component characters. This paper proposes a new system of off-line signature verification, which segments each signature into component characters using these spaces, to verify Japanese countersignatures written on traveler's cheques. The authors conducted an experiment to examine the performance of the proposed method and realized that the proposed method achieved about 7% decrease in error rates compared with the method of overall matching.
