Performance Evaluation of Number of Sub-Carriers for Forward Link Broadband OFCDM Packet Wireless Access in Doppler Spread Channels

Abstract(in English) This paper elucidates the impact of Doppler shift on the packet error rate (PER) performance employing orthogonal frequency and code division multiplexing (OFCDM) packet wireless access and optimizes the number of subcarriers N_c in a broadband multipath fading channel with an approximate 50-100 MHz bandwidth. Simulation results demonstrate when N_c is smaller than 2048 (the corresponding sub-carrier separation is approximately 40kHz), the impact of the Doppler shift on the PER performance is slight assuming a 24-path Rayleigh fading channel with the delay spread of 0.36μsec, that is, the influence of inter sub-carrier interference due to the Doppler shift effect appears when the maximum Doppler frequency ƒ_D>8000(4000)Hz for QPSK (16QAM) with 16 (8) code-multiplexing. Meanwhile, the PER performance with N_c=2048 is degraded compared with that of N_c=512, since the effect of error correction becomes small due to the larger variance of the OFCDM symbol power after despreading caused by the smaller spreading bandwidth in the frequency domain. Consequently, along with the packet frame efficiency for accommodating the guard interval to compensate for the maximum multipath delay time of 1 μsec, we clarify that the optimum number of sub-carriers is approximately 512-1024 for broadband packet wireless access with 50-100MHz bandwidth.
