An OFDM Receiver Scheme for Multipath Environments with Delay Profile over the Guard Interval

Abstract(in English) An OFDM transmission in mobile communications suffers severe performance degradation caused by large multipath delay difference over the Guard Interval (GI). This is the reason why the excess delay difference over GI results in considerable Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) between temporally adjacent symbols and Inter-Carrier Interference (ICI) among subcarriers. This paper proposes a robust OFDM receiver that can effectively suppress both ISI and ICI. This proposed receiver consists of (1) Decision Feedback Equalization (DFE) for ISI, (2) Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (MLSE) that can suppress ICI from the output of DFE and estimate transmitted signals, (3) FFT with smoothed FFT-window that is capable of reducing the number of states of MLSE drastically, and (4) an accurate channel estimation by Recursive Least Squares. First, this paper introduces a configuration of processing units in this receiver and how they are working. Next, computer simulation is conducted in 5 GHz band wireless LAN format in order to verify the performance of the proposed OFDM receiver, and its effectiveness is shown.
