A study of RF Transmitter/Receiver Calibration in Adaptive Antenna Array Transmit Diversity for W-CDMA Forward Link

Abstract(in English) This paper experimentally evaluated the effect of RF calibration which compensates the phase/amplitude variation of RF transmitter/receiver in adaptive antenna array (AAA) transmit diversity in W-CDMA forward link. It was found from the experimental results that RF calibration using common frequency synthesizer between AAA transceivers and a calibration transceiver showed no significant improvements in received SIR and BER performance at mobile station (MS) compared to the independent synthesizer method and that the good performance was obtained by measuring the phase/amplitude variation of RF transceivers at one point level. It was also shown that by AAA transmit diversity using RF calibration with common frequency synthesizer and phase/amplitude measurement at one point level, the required transmit SIR for the average BER of 10^<-3> can be decreased by about 12(14)dB compared to 1-antenna transmitter with (without) antenna diversity reception for 4-antenna element.
