Coverage Prediction for an Adaptive Array Antenna System Using a Ray-Tracing Technique

Abstract(in English) In broadband mobile communications, co-channel interference and inter-symbol interference as well as relatively large propagation loss are the major problems to overcome. Adaptive Array Antennas have been considered effective in solving these problems. Previously, the concepts of beam steering and null steering have been developed as different technology bases for adaptive array antennas. This paper aims to combine beam and null steering concepts : main beam is steered toward the desired signal components while nulls being steered toward interference components. This paper also creates a new channel modeling scheme using ray-tracing to enhance the accuracy of system performance evaluations. Coverage achieved by the proposed antenna system is estimated by using the created channel modeling scheme. Results of a series of computer simulations show that the proposed antenna system can improve SIR performance over a omni antenna system by about 30dB at 95% coverage in a sub-urban area.
