An Analysis of the Performance of a Handset Diversity Antenna Influenced by Head, Hand and Shoulder Effects at 900 MHz

Abstract(in English) An analysis of a diversity antenna for portable telephones, which comprise a whip antenna and a planar inverted F antenna(PIFA)operating at 900 MHz, has been done.The analysis includes the electromagnrtic effects of a human operator. Wire-grid analysis yielded radiation effciency, mean effective gain and correlation characteristics under various incident wave propagation environments with whip length, head-to-radio separation and inclination of the radio from the vertical as parameters.The results indicate that the mean effective gain is as low as -8.5 dBd for a short quarter-wavelength whip antenna and-11 dBd for a PIFA when the head-to-radio separation is 2cm, and the respective gains increase to-7 dBd and-8.5 dBd when a long half-wavelength whip antenna is used.Furthermore, the results suggest that under practical conditions small correlation coefficients of less than 0.3 are expected where the radio inclination is nearly 60 degrees.In further studies the quantitative relationship between power losses caused by the absorption of each region of the human body, by the impedance mismstch, and by the non-excited antenna dissipation was investigated.
