Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A simple model of a Mach-Zehnder external optical modulator(EOM) is used to illustrate how bi-phase modulation of a millimetre wave(MMW)sub-carrier can be accomplished by switching EOM bias with a binary data signal.Experimental results-are-presented to confirm the predictions of the model.A wideband communications test system employing the EOM as a bi-phase modulator and utilizing spread spectrum modulation(40GHz sub-carrier,100MHz chip rate,1OMHz data rate)was developed.Initial bit error rate(BER) measurements are presented and compared with ideal performance and simulated predictions.Degradation of the measurement from the simulation is less than 1dB at a BER of 10^-6>.It is suggested that employing the EOM as a bi-phase modulator has potential applications in future broadband millimetre wave personal communications systems.
