Abstract(in English) In DS-CDMA system, variable rate data transmission can be realized either by using several orthogonal spreading code-channels in parallel (multicode transmission) or by changing the spreading factor of a code-channel according to the transmission rate (variable spreading factor transmission). Orthogonal multicode transmission method can be directly applied to the forward link. However, its drawback is that multiple RAKE combiners are required, thereby increasing the mobile receiver complexity. On the other hand, variable spreading factor transmission method requires a single RAKE receiver, but there has been no solution to achieve orthogonality among code-channels using different spreading factors. In this paper, we propose a tree-structured generation method of orthogonal spreading codes with different code lengths for forward link of coherent DS-CDMA and evaluate its bit error rate (BER) performance under multipath Rayleigh fading and multi-user environments by computer simulation.
