Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper evaluates the performance of a multiplexing scheme used in the MPEG-4 system. The scope of MPEG-4 includes multimedia transmission over error-prone channels such as mobile environments, and thus its multiplexing scheme is required to have a function of robustness against transmission errors. In this scheme, a multiplexed frame has a header information which tells how the frame consists of video, speech/audio, and control data bit streams coming from source encoders and a controller. If this information should be discarded due to channel errors, that frame could be de-multiplexed incorrectly, so that bitstreams supplied to higher layers may have frame insertion and/or deletion. Therefore, the error protection for the header information is indispensable in mobile radio applications. In this paper, its performance is evaluated both in random errors and in burst errors. A new effective error protection scheme for the header information is also proposed and analyzed through computer simulations.
