A Study on Source Coding for Musical Information Represented with MIDI

Abstract(in English) As a way of expressing music by using computer, we aim at MIDI(Musical Instrument Digital Interface). This paper proposes and investigates a source coding scheme for compression of standard MIDI file (SMF) in which a music is represented. The proposed scheme first classifies an SMF into several class of data segments according to statistical properties. Corresponding to the property of each class, LZW coding with several codebooks or arithmetic coding with several probability table are applied. Computer simulation shows that the proposed scheme can improve compression rate over a scheme using single codebook or table.
