Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Secure and authenticated session key transport is a central issue in network security. With the rapid deployment of the information superhighway which uses ATM for data transmission, compactness and efficiency have emerged as critical factors that have to be taken into account in a key transport protocol. There are basically two approaches to the problem: one uses secret key cryptosystems and hence relies on the existence of a trusted key distribution center, while the other is based on public key cryptosystems and does not require the (continuing) involvement of a trusted third party. This paper reports progress in designing key transport protocols in the second approach. In particular, we show that, by the use of the recently invented "signcryption" technology, secure and unforgeable session keys can be efficiently transported in a single ATM cell whose payload usable in transporting data has only 384 bits.
