Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recognizing characters on signboards in a scene would be very useful for a translation, an acquisition of relevant information through Internet, and so on. In this paper we present a method for extracting characters on signboards in arbitrary scene images, which does not require any manual operation. We first describe briefly the framework of information handling system driven by characters on signboards in scene images. Next, a method for detecting signboard regions and each character region is investigated by considering a characteristic of signboards. The proposed method for extracting signboard regions is based on hierarchical clustering in L^*a^*b^* color space. Each character on signboards is extracted by using a binarization followed by horizontal and vertical projections. The effectiveness of the proposed method is shown through an experiment with 1000 various scene images.
