Improvements for Displaying Quality of a Field-Sequential Color CRT Using a Liquid Crystal Color Shutter : A 15" LC Color Shutter CRT Using Anti-Ferroelectric Liquid Crystal Materials

Abstract(in English) We fabricated a prototype of a field-sequential color CRT using a liquid crystal color shutter (LCCS) with a diagonal size of 15 inches. In order to reduce a color breakup artifact, anti-ferroelectric liquid crystal materials are applied for the cell fabrication in the LCCS for the purpose of fast switching. The optical design of the LCCS was performed using the Jones matrix calculation and the optimization of the optical parameters such as transmittance of chromatic polarizers, a spectrum of a phosphor in the monochrome CRT. And film compensation of the LC cell maximized its optical efficiency and color gamut. This prototype realized displaying at a 540 Hz field frequency by adjustment of the driving sequence of the LCCS-CRT and the relation between the number of the LCCS driving stripes and the lifetime of the phosphor in the CRT.
