Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We have developed a printing fabrication process for large and light-weight liquid crystal devices and have fabricated ferroelectric liquid crystal (FLC) devices with plastic film substrates. The proposed process is based on a flexographic printing method. FLC/monomer solution coated on an anilox roll was uniformly deposited on the letter press and then transferred to the surface of the substrate from the letter press. This method is able to control thickness and printing area of the solution on the substrate. Pressure of a roller for lamination was adjusted so that an upper substrate was pressed onto spacers dispersed in the solution. Formation of air bubble in the solution was reduced by heating upper and lower substrates to 50℃. And then the laminated cell was pressed by a glass to prevent curling of the substrates and to obtain uniform cell temperature. After the cell was irradiated by ultraviolet light, polymer network which supports the substrates was formed in the FLC. Alignment of liquid crystal molecules was observed. Light modulation effects including grayscale capability were also observed when voltage was applied between electrodes of the devices.
