Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) High optical anisotropy (Δn) and small rotational viscosity (γ_1) liquid crystal material has been investigated for field-sequential color TN-LCD applications. By introducing the new tolane substances, it was succeeded to develop novel LC mixtures which coexisted high Δn and small γ_1, which enable TN-LCDs to switch fast enough to be applied to field-sequential color displays not only at room temperature but also at deep one. These LCDs should be driven by active matrix for color images. Therefore it was also confirmed that the voltage-holding ratio (VHR) was sufficiently high at high temperature. In due consideration of practical use, the storage test of TN-cells under light irradiation was performed regarding their VHR property. It was confirmed that high VHR could be kept for over 10, 000 hours under a practical condition.
