Chemical Reaction Degree and Orientation Order of A Polymer Layer in The Photo-alignment

抄録(英) So far as the fabrication of most liquid crystal devices(LCD)requires control of molecular alignment at macroscopic scale. This is achieved most simply by mechanically rubbing the inner surfaces of the substrates made of the liquid crystal cells. The shortcoming of the rubbing technique is that induces charges and dusts which lead to short-off between the electrodes of the cell. In the last decade. the research of the optically controlled alignment has been rapidly developed. However, such photo alignment is still lack of confidence for the popular application due to its week anchoring strength on the surfaces. We found that in the most publications the photo-polymerizations were made from those gigantic pre-polymer molecules so that there is no effective photo-polymerization but only cross-linking happened in the optical reactions actually. Therefore it is hard to say how large the orientation order in the photo polymerization layer. In our work, we try to find a good way to obtain the photo-polymerization alignmenl layer with high orientation order. We adopted small rod-shaped monomer molecules to carry through the photo-polymerization. The experimental result identified our conjecture.
