Abstract(in English) Mercury-free flat discharge lamps with diagonal sizes ranging from 0.5 to 5.2 inches have been developed for LCD backlights. The lamps have simple structures with insulated electrodes. Optical and electrical characteristics are independent of ambient temperature. The Xe lamps assume luminance build-up within a few μs. Uniform discharges are obtained by adjusting drive pulse voltage and waveforms. As the lamp diagonal becomes larger, luminance and efficacy increase and the dimming range becomes wider. Luminance and efficacy of Hg lamps is lower than that of Xe lamp, except when the Hg lamps is operated at low luminance levels.
