Optimization of Electro-Optical Properties in a Single-Polarizer Reflective TN-LCD with a Quarter-Wave Plate

Abstract(in English) Reflective color LCDs without back lighting are important devices for the progress and popularization of portable information terminals. In this paper, we numerically analyzed the electro-optical properties of a normally white mode achromatic reflective LCD using a single-polarizer TN-LCD with a quarter-wave plate. We found that the 72゜ cell is the optimum rather than the 90゜ cell previously proposed as MTN mode because of its high luminous reflectance of about 50% and a practical contrast ratio of 30:1.
