Abstract(in English) A flat lamp is developed for an 18-in.-diagonal LCD backlighting, using 8 electric-field-coupled dischange tubes. Since we confine the application of the lamp to the LCD backlighting, EMI shield is relatively easy. Electric-field-coupled dischange lamps are considered to relatively long life because they utilize exernal electrodes. Also the high-frequency field assures more efficient light emission compared to the low-frequency dischange. Since number or positions of the exernal electrodes can be decided at will, longer tubes can be ignited with lower voltages. Luminance and efficacy are 3500 cd/m^2, 34lm/W when the lamp is driven at 5.24 MHz and 790 V_. In this backlighting, the tubes can be driven with a single inverter circuit.
