Vertically Aligned STN-LCD

Abstract(in English) We developed a Vertically Aligned STN-LCD, based on homeotropic alignment, characterized by high transmittance and contrast ratio on the condition of high duty muliplex driving. This LCD exhibits high steepness of electro-optical performance which is equivalent to a conventional planer aligned STN-LCD. This device is able to display black and white under the crossed Nicol condition without using color compensator, becaase the LCD cell has no retardation at initial alignment. This report shows and discusses concept of Vertically Aligned STN-LCD, and results of computer simulations and experiments.
