Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A use of car-navigation systems under severe environmental conditions assesses LCD backlightings to be operable under a temperature range of -30 and 80℃. Although we developed a simple-structured high-luminance flat discharge lamp, the use of mercury caused difficulty in igniting the lamp under low temperatures. Hg pollution, of course, is another issue. In this paper, we introduce a Hg-free flat discharge lamp. A stable operation is attained by lowering the drive pulse duty. Also high luminance of 7,700cd/m^2 as well as high luminous efficacy of 20.6lm/W are obtained by narrowing the drive pulse width.
