Abstract(in English) Gray scale in active matrix electroluminescent display (AMEL) has been produced by sub-frame averaging method. It is difficult for EL display to obtain 256 gray scale using only pulse number modulation, due to slower response time of EL devices than that of PDP devices. We proposed new method which uses the combination of pulse number modulation and amplitude modulation in a frame to solve this problem. We have applied this method to an AMEL pixel and demonstrated a feasibility of AMEL display with 256 gray levels.
