Luminous Efficiency Improvement of Flat Discharge Fluorescent Lamp for LCD Backlighting

Abstract(in English) Recently high luminance backlightings for LCDs are required for car-navigation systems. We reported previously a flat discharge fluorescent lamp having high luminance and uniformity, and get a simple structure. Luminous efficiency however was only 12[lm/W], not satisfactory. In this paper the efficiency is improved to 23.5[lm/W] by widening widths of the voltage pulses, thus assuring sufficient accumulation of wall charges. The mechanism of efficiency improvement is also clarified.
