Abstract(in English)	This is the first part of reports on the fourth color imaging conference, which took place on November 19-22, 1996 in Scottsdale, Arizona, USA. The conference is being held in the place every year by IS&T and SID. The main topics relate fundamental science and technology for color imaging apparatus and systems. Sixty two papers were presented and more than three hundred people participated the conference. Summary on the papers presented there are reported in two parts, including the next report by Usui. This report discusses the topics described in the subtitle.
