Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) This paper presents simulated and experimental results of a microwave variable delay line using a liquid crystal. Except for large insertion loss, the delay characteristics are flat over a wide microwave frequency range. Analyses of the attenuation of the delay line indicate that the large insertion loss is mainly caused by conductive loss of the microstrip line. Increasing the thickness of the liquid crystal reduces the loss. We suggest using, for example, polymer-dispersed liquid crystals for the thick liquid crystal layer because controlling the molecular orientation of these liquid crystals is easy.
