Characteristics of Roofed Dielectric Resonator Antennas

Abstract(in English) A roofed dielectric resonator antenna is proposed. It is a dietectric resonator antenna with a metal top to cover. Experimental study has been carried out to understand basic characteristics of the antenna. It is demonstrated that placing the metal top on dielectric resonator is very effective for constructing low profile as well as small size antennas. The magnetic field on metal top has also been measured to obtain insight into the antenna radiation mechanism. A novel discovery is that efficient radiation still takes place even if metal top is considerably larger than dielectric resonator in area. An array of roofed dielectric resonator antennas has been tested successfully. The roofed dielectric resonator antenna is a new type of antenna and shares radiating properties with the dielectric resonator antenna and the patch antenna. The establishment of the design theory is in urgent need.
