Window-based Permit Distribution Scheme for ATM PON

Abstract(in English) As a delivery network between the high speed ATM backbone and users in end point, ATM passive optical network(APON) provides an efficient sharing way to access broadband services. APON based on tree topology with passive optical splitter requires efficient medium access control(MAC) to multiplex the upstream data flows without any disturbance of the original traffic pattern. In this paper, we propose the MAC protocol for APON which can improve CDV performance by using a window-based permit distribution scheme. The generated cell rate during one request period is derived by the unit of time segment in one window, and permit is spaced not to cluster the cells in upstream transmission. The proposed permit distribution algorithm makes the permit arrival rate close to the cell arrival rate, so, reduces the CDV even if under the varied traffic patterns. And the proposed scheme does not require the additional MAC overhead for cell arrival timing information. The performance of proposed MAC protocol is compared with current protocol in terms of transfer delay and 1-point CDV through simulation.
