Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) In data communication over an ATM network, a packet is discarded at the destination point when at least one cell of the packet is lost in the network. Hence the cells of discarded packets may waste the network capacity, and this may cause decrease in packet throughput. To avoid this phenomenon, we propose a selective cell discard scheme, which uses a cell counter and the packet size information of an ambling packet in order to determine its acceptance. This information can be gotten from the value of BASize in the first cell of the packet when the ATM Adaptation Layer type 3 or 4 (AAL3/4) is implemented. We evaluate the proposed scheme by computer simulation, and show that it maintains high packet throughput even in severe overload and achieves fair acceptance among packets with different lengths.
