Abstract(in English) In ALPEN, an ATM Multi-protocol Emulation Network, the transit switch should send only the information about the residual bandwidth of the output link. Various ATM layer services requested by users are emulated by the edge node. In this paper, we propose a rate control scheme for high-speed burst transmission. This scheme avoids congestion even if the network is highly loaded. It also provides high-speed transmission under relatively light loads. The edge node responds to user requests quickly because it knows route status. This scheme can reduce effect of the long transmission delays possible in ATM-WAN. Its mechanisms and performance are described in the paper.
