Application of In-plane Type Autocloned Photonic Crystals

Abstract(in English) Photonic crystals fabricated by autocloning method can produce various kinds of functional devices by utilizing light propagation in the parallel direction to the substrate. In this paper, we investigate in-plane propagation of Ta_2O_5/SiO_2 photonic crystals theoretically and experimentally. The propagation low was measured to be 2 dB/mm at λ=1.55 μm, showing the crystals are useful for low loss waveguide. Furthermore, we propose novel in-plane type devices such as optical resonators using a bandgap and slab lenses using an effective refractive index change due to lattice modulation.
