Ceramic Substrate with Negative Thermal Expansion for Athermalization of Fiber Bragg Gratings

Abstract(in English) Fiber Bragg Grating(FBG) has various application in WDM system. Several methods for athermalization of FBG have been proposed because Bragg wavelength of FBG shows temperature dependence. The authors have developed Negative Expansion Ceramic Substrate(NECS) for the athermalization of FBG. NECS consists of polycrystalline β-quarts s.s. (Li_2O-Al_2O_3-nSiO_2 : n≧2), and its negative thermal expansion is large enough to compensate Bragg wavelength shift It was found that hysteresis in thermal expansion depends upon crystalline structure, and both strong negative expansion and low hysteresis were achieved by controlling crystalline structure. In this paper, thermal expansion behavior of NECS and performance of the FBG mounted on NECS are reported.
