Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Emerging problem of the pin-I/O bottleneck at the interface of silicon integrated circuits have gradually been realized as one of major hindrances to the future performance improvements of computer systems. Free-space optical interconnection has been expected to solve this bottleneck due to its inherent parallelism and electromagnetic immunity, leading to high-density parallel signal links. We analyzed scalability of the free-space optical interconnections in terms of minimum feature size of diffractive optical elements used and found that the interconnection density of 1000 to 2000 interconnections/cm can be readily available using currently available technologies. Proto-type photonic circuit for 40mm interconnection length was demonstrated with 3mm-thick optical substrate. Imaging capability confirmed its applicability for inter-chip free-space interconnections.
