Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) The switching operation of a polariton directional-coupler-type device, which can be applied to a high-speed optical-modulator with low-voltage operation, was demonstrated. The temperature dependence of polariton phase change was also investigated. The measured operation voltage of a polariton directional-coupler is 1.8 V at 10 K. The corresponding signal extinction ratio is 8 dB. The temperature dependence of phase change was measured using a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. The measured phase change at a lower temperature was considerably larger than that at a higher temperature, and the critical temperature was around 120 K. Such a high critical temperature indicates a possibility of a polariton device operation in a relatively high-temperature region.
