Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recent development of trans-oceanic optical networks and advancement in high speed OTDM system-study encounter Polarization Mode Dispersion (PMD) as ultimate limitation. There are many traces which suggest the second wave in PMD study, such as success in PMD equalization of 10Gb/stransmission line. Also, in optical communication systems, the coherence of light sources is improved drastically. This fact promotes us to use scattering matrix description to analyze Polarization Mode Dispersion without considering finite interference length. We propose here new derivation of PMD operator based on Tayor expansion of polarization state which gives us clear physical understanding of PMD and lead to useful definition of higher order PMD.
