Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Nd^<3+>-doped fiber and Pr^<3+>-doped fiber have been investigated for optical amplifiers operating around 1.3μm. We have studied improvement in the gain performance by optimizing host glasses for Nd^<3+> and Pr^<3+>. Using fluorophosphate glasses chosen for 1.3μm laser host of Nd^<3+>-doped fiber, laser emission and peak gain were first observed at 1.32μm which coincides with a fluorescence peak wavelength. This is attributed to smaller ESA in the fluorophosphate glasses. However, higher gain amplification has been reported with a high NA Pr^<3+>-doped ZrF_4-base fluoride (ZBLAN) single mode fiber. The efficiency of Pr^<3+>-doped fiber can be improved by means of using low phonon energy host glasses and increasing the Δn. We prepared Pr^<3+>-doped In/Ga-based fluoride glass (lower phonon energy than ZBLAN) single mode fibers with the largest Δn ever. Efficient amplification with a gain coefficient of 0.25dB/mW at 1.31μm was demonstrated.
