Abstract(in English) It is important to estimate quantitatively and compensate the birefringence induced by thermal stress in laser-diode (LD) pumped solid-state lasers so as to improve thier performance. We have developed a novel two-dimensional (2D) polarimeter for this purpose. This polarimeter was successfully used to measure the 2D birefringence in LD pumped Nd:glass(HAP4) and Nd:YAG laser rods. The energy loss due to this birefringence in a polarized laser cavity were estimated using Jones matrix. The compensation of the birefringence in LD pumped Nd:glass(HAP4) rods was performed almost perfectly using a 90° rotator between two identically pumped rods.
