Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) An optically addressed parallel-aligned nematic-liquid-crystal spatial light modulator (PAL-SLM) has been studied as a dynamic phase-only light modulation device. Phase modulation characteristics of the PAL-SLM was investigated by analyzing diffraction efficiencies which were obtained from sinusoidal patterns and rectangular patterns written on the PAL-SLM The sinusoidal patterns were produced by Mach-Zehnder interferometer and rectangular patterns were produced by an LCTV. The experimental results agree well with a theoretical analysis. The highest first order diffraction efficiency of approximately 30% for a sinusoidal pattern and approximately 38% for a rectangular pattern were obtained, which are both close to the theoretical maximums, and a more than 2π phase-only modulation depth was achieved. The structure and principle of the device are also presented.
