Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) We report a new technique for optical pulse compression, which utilizes the four-wave mixing efficiency's dependence on pump power. A small-core fiber with a mode field diameter of 4.2 μm is used and the pump wavelength is set to 3.1 nm longer than the zero-dispersion wavelength of the fiber. In this case, the efficiency of the four-wave mixing increases rapidly as the pump power increases. Therefore when a signal pulse is coupled into the fiber with a pump pulse, only the peak of the signal is amplified sharply in time. By using this characteristic, a 93 ps signal pulse is compressed to a 20 ps pulse and the peak power is amplified by 29.0 dB. The wavelength-converted signal has a pulse width of 21 ps, and the peak power of the converted signal is larger by as much as 28.9 dB than that of the input signal.
