Optical Waveguide Devices with Nonlinear Claddings

Abstract(in English) In a three layer slab optical waveguide with claddings having nonlinear refractive index, light intensity distribution (power distribution) is investigated along the propagation process. The nonlinear refractive index can take either sign (positive or negative). For respective cases, the optical propagating process is investigated using the beam propagation method by referring to the result obtained for the relations of input optical intensity versus effective refractive index of the waveguide. For the case of claddings of positive nonlinear refractive index, an optical switching action, whereas for the case of claddings of negative nonlinear refractive index, a power limiting action, are obtained, respectively.
