Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) A grating coupler utilizing higher-order diffraction is interesting and may increase design flexibility because of its much longer grating period compared to a conventional 1st-order grating coupler. Integration of reflection layer beneath the grating coupler was studied to provide high coupling efficiency of a guided wave to a beam radiated by higher-order diffraction into the air. Coupling efficiency of a guided wave to each diffraction beam depends strongly upon thickness of layers consisting the waveguides because of interference between diffraction and reflection beams. A 3rd order grating coupler of 1.86μm period was designed, fabricated and characterized for 0.82μm wavelength in a glass waveguide. Output coupling efficiency of 40% was experimentally obtained.
