Integration of grating couplers in two-story waveguides for integrated-optic polarization-rotation detection device

Abstract(in English) An integrated optic device was proposed and demonstrated for polarization-rotation detection. The device was constructed by integrating two types of focusing grating couplers (FGCs) in two-story thin film slab waveguides. A TM mode diverging from a end-fire point in a first floor of the waveguides was coupled out by a FGC to a beam in the air. The beam was reflected by a mirror on a quarter-wave plate and was coupled and deflected by a two-segmented deflecting FGC to be two TE modes directed to two detecting points in a second floor. Intensity dependence of the TE modes upon the rotation angle of the quarter-wave plate was measured, and an extinction ratio of 14 dB was obtained.
