Abstract(in English) It has been considered that the QoS of MPEG pictures gets worse according to the increase in cell jitter of MPEG traffic. After measuring real MPEG cell stream through our experimental system under TAO project, we find that the above does not necessarily hold. Following our observation, it is concluded that the quality of pictures is damaged by the occurrence of cells' early arrivals to receiving buffer. By early arrival, we mean that a group of cells arrive with significantly shorter intervals than preceding cells. Traffic shaping can relax these intervals and as a result be effective to improve the QoS of MPEG pictures transmitted through ATM networks.
