Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Identity verification is one of the most important function in information society with which personal information or billing information is dealt. In the case that smart cards or terminals are used, a system should verify the persons that use the cards or the terminals. Furthermore, in electronic commerce, public keys should be deposited in a certificate authority after users of the keys are authenticated exactly. Of course, an authentication process is carried out in present personal communication systems. In PDC(Personal Digital Cellular), for example, a challenge-response type authentication is performed using cryptographic technology. Through this authentication process, a terminal can be verified but the user of the terminal is not always done. A password is the best-known parameter to verify the user himself/herself, but it is feared that short passwords, such as four decimal digits, can be guessed using the user's personal information(e.g.telephone numbers or birthdays). A biometric method is one of technologies to solve above items.
