Abstract(in Japanese) (See Japanese page)
Abstract(in English) Recently, the Internet and intranet have been rapidly expanded, and audio and video transmission over these networks has been widely available due to the enhancement of CPU performance and the introduction of multimedia PCs. In addition, a variety of audio video transmission systems have been proposed and utilized over the networks. The quality of audio and video in these transmission systems greatly depends on coding algorithms, network bandwidth variations, and client capabilities. In this paper, firstly we briefly describe recent audio and video transmission systems. Then we discuss quality scalabilities for network bandwidth variations using multi-stream coding and hierarchical coding. We also describe quality control for client capabilities using fast partial decoding algorithms.
